Why I Started Diary of a Nobody
A new journey begins
When I retired, I expected freedom.
What I didn’t expect was emptiness.
Like many people, I had spent decades working, solving problems and following routines. My days had structure and purpose. Then one day it stopped.
I did the things retirement is supposed to be about.
I took a holiday.
I relaxed.
I enjoyed the freedom.
Yet something was missing.
For the first time in my life, I found myself asking a difficult question:
What now?
As a young man, I had always been creative. I enjoyed making things, exploring ideas and imagining possibilities. Somewhere along the way, life became busy and those interests drifted into the background.
Retirement gave me time, but it also forced me to confront something deeper. If work was no longer the thing that defined my days, what would?
The first step was journaling.
I started writing down observations, thoughts and questions. At first it was simply a way of making sense of my own experiences. But something unexpected happened.
The act of writing began to unlock creativity.
One idea led to another.
Observations became reflections.
Reflections became stories.
Stories became artwork.
Artwork led to new questions.
Over time, what started as a personal journal evolved into something much larger.
Diary of a Nobody is a place to explore change.
Change in ourselves.
Change in society.
Change brought about by technology.
Change brought about by ageing, retirement and life’s unexpected turns.
Through stories, observation, creativity and reflection, I’m trying to make sense of a world that seems to be changing faster than ever.
I don’t claim to have the answers.
I’m simply curious enough to keep asking questions.
And if those questions resonate with you, you’re welcome to join the journey.
The investigation continues.
