When I started writing It’s Never Too Late to Find Your Voice, I thought I was writing about AI.

I wasn’t.

The original idea came from YouTube’s decision to reduce the monetisation of repetitive, low-value AI-generated content. Like many people, my first reaction was to ask whether AI was changing creativity.

But as I started writing, something interesting happened.

The technology slowly disappeared from the centre of the article.

What emerged instead was a much more personal question.

Why had I waited until retirement to share my thoughts?

The answer surprised me.

It wasn’t because I had nothing to say.

It was because I didn’t believe anyone would be interested in hearing it.

For years, I’d assumed that writers were other people. Journalists. Authors. Academics.

Not someone who had spent a career solving technical problems.

The turning point wasn’t discovering AI.

It was discovering that AI could help me express ideas that had been sitting quietly in my head for years.

During the editing process, my Editorial Board kept challenging me.

Austin Kleon asked me to stop explaining and start telling my story.

Seth Godin reminded me that the article wasn’t really about AI—it was about the moment everything changed.

Oliver Burkeman encouraged me to admit uncertainty instead of pretending to have the answers.

George Saunders kept bringing me back to the emotional heart of the piece.

Then one memory surfaced.

The first time I pressed Publish, I almost didn’t.

The question running through my mind was painfully simple:

“Who would be interested in the opinion of an old man?”

That question became the heart of the article.

Not because I found an answer.

But because I realised I wasn’t the only person asking it.

Perhaps that’s what writing is really about.

Not proving that you’re right.

But asking a question that makes someone else feel a little less alone.

Daniel decided to avoid the café that morning.

Instead, he wandered into Harper’s Books, an independent bookshop tucked between a florist and a watch repair shop on Market Street.

It was one of those places where every shelf seemed to hold an unexpected discovery.

The owner, Helen, looked up from arranging a display.

“Morning, Daniel.”

“I thought I’d see what was new.”

Helen smiled.

“I’ve been wondering the same thing.”

He laughed.

“I meant books.”

“So did I.”

She gestured towards a table near the window.

“We’ve had three customers this week asking for the same title.”

“What title?”

“That’s the strange part.”

She paused.

“They couldn’t remember.”

Daniel frowned.

“They came in asking for a book they’d seen recommended online.”

“Nothing unusual about that.”

“No.”

She looked thoughtfully towards the shelves.

“But every one of them described the same cover differently.”

Daniel picked up a newly published novel.

“So they remembered the recommendation...”

“...but not the book.”

Helen nodded.

“And when I searched for it later, I couldn’t find anything that matched.”

Before Daniel could reply, a young woman approached the counter.

“Excuse me,” she said. “I’m looking for a book about... I can’t remember exactly.”

Helen smiled gently.

“Can you remember the author?”

“No.”

“The title?”

She shook her head.

“I only remember that everyone seemed to be talking about it.”

After a few minutes, the woman apologised and left empty-handed.

Daniel watched through the shop window as she disappeared into the market square.

“Does that happen often?” he asked.

Helen sighed.

“More than it used to.”

She walked towards a shelf labelled Local Authors.

“People still ask for books they choose themselves.”

She rested her hand on one of the shelves.

“But more and more arrive looking for something they’ve been shown.”

Daniel looked around the shop.

Hundreds of books.

Thousands of ideas.

Yet somehow many people were searching for the same handful.

“Do you think recommendations are becoming too influential?” he asked.

Helen smiled.

“I think recommendations have always influenced us.”

She paused before adding quietly,

“I’m just not sure who is doing the recommending anymore.”

Neither of them spoke for a while.

Outside, the afternoon shoppers drifted through Market Street.

A bus pulled away from the stop.

Someone laughed outside the bakery.

Northbridge carried on exactly as it always had.

As Daniel stepped back onto the pavement, his phone vibrated.

A notification appeared.

He had barely opened the first chapter when an elderly man sitting opposite looked up from his newspaper.

“Those won’t tell you what you’re really looking for.”

Daniel smiled politely.

“What do you think I’m looking for?”

The man folded the newspaper carefully.

“An explanation.”

Daniel laughed.

“I didn’t realise it was that obvious.”

“It isn’t.”

The man pointed towards the books.

“People usually read those after something unexpected has happened.”

Daniel closed the cover.

“Has it happened to you?”

The man thought for a moment.

“Not to me.”

He looked around the library before lowering his voice.

“But I’ve heard enough conversations in this building to know people are asking different questions than they used to.”

“What kind of questions?”

“They’re no longer asking how things work.”

Daniel waited.

“They’re asking why things happened.”

The librarian returned with a trolley of books.

The conversation drifted away.

The old man stood, collected his newspaper and smiled.

“I’m Peter.”

“Daniel.”

“Good luck.”

“With what?”

Peter looked towards the library windows where students crossed the square outside.

“Knowing the difference between a mistake and a pattern.”

Then he left.

Daniel remained where he was for several minutes.

On the noticeboard beside the entrance, he noticed another poster.

It wasn’t advertising a book club.

Or a history lecture.

Or a local concert.

It simply read:

Living in a Digital World

All welcome.

No speakers were listed.

No organisation was named.

Only a date.

And the Northbridge Library logo.

Daniel took another photograph.

As he stepped back into the afternoon sunshine, the town looked exactly as it always had.

Children chased pigeons across the square.

Buses arrived.

Shops opened their doors.

Nothing had changed.

Except that Northbridge seemed to be asking questions it had never asked before.

“So have I.”

“I thought I’d done something wrong.”

“You too?”

Daniel looked down at his coffee.

He wasn’t trying to overhear.

The café wasn’t particularly busy.

Silence made voices travel.

The younger man shrugged.

“Support said everything was working normally.”

The woman laughed quietly.

“They told me exactly the same thing.”

“What was your problem?”

“My online shop.”

“And yours?”

“My photography website.”

The older man smiled without humour.

“My local history blog.”

The three of them looked at one another.

Different ages.

Different professions.

Different websites.

The same answer.

Everything is working normally.

Grace appeared beside Daniel’s table.

“You look miles away.”

He hesitated.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Have people seemed... different lately?”

She frowned.

“In what way?”

“I don’t know.”

“People always seem worried about something.”

She topped up the sugar bowls on nearby tables before continuing.

“Although...”

Daniel looked up.

“There have been more conversations lately.”

“What kind of conversations?”

She shrugged.

“People asking questions nobody seems able to answer.”

Before Daniel could reply, someone called Grace from behind the counter.

She smiled apologetically and walked away.

The conversation ended there.

Daniel finished his coffee and packed away his laptop.

As he crossed the market square, he noticed something he’d walked past hundreds of times without really seeing.

A public noticeboard.

Most of the posters advertised concerts, charity events and community groups.

One small card had been pinned neatly in the corner.

It wasn’t dramatic.

There was no warning.

No flashing notification.

No email marked Important.

His latest article had simply... disappeared.

Not deleted.

It was still there if someone searched for it directly.

Subscribers could still read it.

But the steady trickle of new readers had stopped overnight.

Daniel opened the publishing dashboard again.

Views had fallen to almost nothing.

He refreshed the page.

Nothing changed.

He checked another article.

Then another.

The same pattern.

His archive was intact, yet it felt as though someone had quietly turned off the lights.

He searched the help pages.

Everything appeared normal.

No policy updates.

No account warnings.

No explanation.

He submitted a support request.

Thank you for contacting us. Your enquiry has been received.

That was all.

Northbridge was beginning to wake.

The market square was already filling with people carrying takeaway coffees. Cyclists weaved between buses outside the railway station, while students from Northbridge University drifted towards early lectures.

Everything looked exactly as it always had.

Daniel slipped his laptop into his bag and crossed the square to his usual café.

Grace, the owner, smiled as she placed a flat white on the counter.

“The usual?”

He nodded.

“You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“My articles have disappeared.”

She frowned.

“Disappeared?”

“Not exactly. They’re still there. It’s just... nobody seems to be finding them anymore.”

Grace shrugged sympathetically.

“Probably just one of those computer things.”

“Maybe.”

He wanted to believe her.

At the next table, two students were talking.

“...same thing happened to my channel.”

“I thought it was just me.”

Daniel wasn’t trying to listen.

But those seven words lingered long after the conversation had moved on.

I thought it was just me.

He looked around the café.

People laughed.

Conversations continued.

The coffee machine hissed.

Outside, buses arrived on time.

Northbridge looked perfectly ordinary.

Yet for the first time in years, Daniel had the uncomfortable feeling that something important had changed...

Every life has a place that quietly shapes the person we become.

For Michael, it was a small room above an old workshop—a place filled with the sounds of tools, the smell of timber and the endless curiosity of a young boy discovering how things were made.

Dear Thomas,

There is one place I have never told you about.

Not because it wasn’t important.

Quite the opposite.

Some memories become so much a part of who we are that we forget to speak about them.

Long before computers filled offices.

Long before artificial intelligence began reshaping the world.

Long before I ever imagined writing these letters to you...

There was a room above an old workshop.

It wasn’t large.

The wooden floor creaked with every step.

The windows rattled whenever the wind blew.

In winter it was cold.

In summer it became unbearably warm.

To anyone else it would have looked ordinary.

To me...

It was the place where my future quietly began.

Below, the workshop was always alive.

The sound of saws cutting timber.

The steady rhythm of hammers.

The smell of freshly cut wood.

Machines that seemed enormous to a young boy.

But it wasn’t the tools I remember most.

It was the people.

Men and women who took pride in making things properly.

If something was worth building, it was worth building well.

No one rushed.

No one looked for shortcuts.

They believed that the person receiving their work deserved their very best.

I didn’t understand it then.

I do now.

The workshop taught me something school never could.

Work wasn’t simply about earning money.

It was about creating something that didn’t exist before.

Something useful.

Something beautiful.

Something that made another person’s life just a little better.

Those lessons stayed with me throughout my life.

When I became an engineer.

When I solved problems.

When I retired.

Even now, as I write these letters.

One afternoon I asked the old foreman why everyone seemed so happy despite working so hard.

He smiled without looking up from the piece of oak he was shaping.

“Michael...”

“People think we’re making furniture.”

He ran his hand across the smooth timber.

“We’re not.”

“What are we making?”

He looked around the workshop.

“We’re making ourselves.”

I didn’t understand.

He laughed.

“You become like the work you choose to do.”

“If you build carelessly...”

“...you become careless.”

“If you build with patience...”

“...you become patient.”

“If you build with pride...”

“...you become someone who values excellence.”

I’ve carried those words with me ever since.

Years later, when machines became more capable than any human being...

When artificial intelligence could design, calculate and create faster than we ever could...

I often thought back to that workshop.

Technology had changed.

People had changed.

But the desire to create...

To solve problems...

To leave something worthwhile behind...

That never disappeared.

It simply found new tools.

Perhaps that’s why retirement never felt like an ending.

I had stopped doing one kind of work.

But I had not stopped creating.

These letters became my new workshop.

Every story...

Every memory...

Every reflection...

Another piece carefully made by hand.

Not from timber.

But from experience.

As I sit here writing this final letter, I realise something.

I began these letters hoping to explain the future.

Instead, they helped me understand my own past.

I’ve written about artificial intelligence, retirement and a world transformed by technology.

But none of those things were ever the real story.

The real story has always been about people.

The people who choose kindness when it would be easier not to.

The people who keep creating, even when the world tells them they’re no longer needed.

The people who plant trees whose shade they will never sit beneath.

The people who listen.

Who encourage.

Who forgive.

Who quietly make the world a better place without expecting recognition.

Technology will continue to change.

New inventions will come and go.

Entire industries will disappear.

Others will be born.

But some things should never become obsolete.

Curiosity.

Compassion.

Integrity.

Hope.

The future will never need fewer good people, Thomas.

It will only need them in different ways.

If these letters have taught you anything, I hope it is this:

Never be afraid of change.

Never stop learning.

Never stop making things with your hands or your imagination.

Never stop noticing the people others overlook.

Never stop choosing kindness when indifference feels easier.

Never stop believing that one ordinary person can make an extraordinary difference.

And above all...

Never stop being curious.

Because curiosity is where every discovery begins.

Every invention begins.

Every friendship begins.

Every act of kindness begins.

And every better future begins.

One day these letters will simply become old paper.

The ink will fade.

The pages will grow worn.

But I hope the ideas they contain will continue to live on.

Not because they were written by me.

But because you choose to carry them forward.

It is one of the most important questions of the twenty-first century, yet it is discussed surprisingly little.

Whether you live in Britain, the United States, Canada, Spain, Australia, Japan or almost any other developed nation, the same reality is emerging.

We are living longer than ever before.

And that changes everything.

The greatest success with an unexpected consequence

For thousands of years, reaching old age was a privilege enjoyed by relatively few.

Today, millions of people can expect to live well into their eighties and beyond.

This is one of humanity’s greatest achievements.

Better healthcare.

Better nutrition.

Safer workplaces.

Medical advances.

We should celebrate that success.

But every success creates new challenges.

Longer lives mean more people living with chronic illness.

More people needing care.

More people living alone.

More years spent in retirement.

Societies across the world were never designed for this scale of longevity.

The family has changed

For generations, families often cared for older relatives.

Several generations lived close together.

Children grew up knowing their grandparents.

Neighbours looked in on one another.

That world still exists in many places, but it is becoming less common.

Children move away for work.

Families are smaller.

Many people never have children.

Relationships change.

Communities become more fragmented.

Love between families has not disappeared.

Distance has increased.

And distance makes care more difficult.

The silent epidemic

Many people fear illness.

Many fear dementia.

Many fear losing their independence.

But ask older people what worries them most, and another answer often appears.

Being alone.

Loneliness is rarely dramatic.

It arrives quietly.

The conversations become less frequent.

The telephone rings less often.

Friends become fewer.

Partners die.

Mobility becomes more difficult.

Days become quieter.

It is possible to be surrounded by millions of people and still feel invisible.

Can governments solve this?

Governments play an essential role.

Healthcare.

Social care.

Housing.

Transport.

Public spaces.

All of these matter.

But governments alone cannot create belonging.

No government programme can replace genuine friendship.

No policy can manufacture neighbours who know one another.

No budget can guarantee kindness.

Governments can provide services.

Communities provide connection.

We need both.

Will technology become our carer?

Artificial intelligence is already beginning to transform healthcare.

Wearable devices can monitor heart rhythms.

Smart homes can detect falls.

Robots are being developed to assist with daily living.

Virtual assistants can remind people to take medication or attend appointments.

These innovations will become increasingly important.

But technology should never become an excuse to reduce human contact.

A robot may help someone stand.

It cannot share a lifetime of memories.

An AI assistant may answer questions.

It cannot replace the comfort of someone who genuinely cares.

Technology should support human relationships.

Not replace them.

Perhaps retirement needs a new purpose

For much of the last century, retirement meant stopping.

Stopping work.

Slowing down.

Taking life easier.

That idea no longer feels sufficient.

Many people now spend twenty or even thirty years in retirement.

That is an entire chapter of life.

Perhaps retirement should become a period of contribution rather than withdrawal.

Mentoring younger people.

Volunteering.

Creating art.

Learning new skills.

Supporting local communities.

Starting businesses.

Sharing experience.

The Third Act should not be defined by what we stop doing.

It should be defined by what we choose to become.

A global challenge

Ageing populations are no longer unique to one country.

Japan faces them.

Italy faces them.

Spain faces them.

Canada faces them.

Australia faces them.

The United States faces them.

Britain faces them.

The details differ.

The challenge is shared.

Every nation is searching for answers.

Some invest heavily in technology.

Others focus on healthcare.

Others rely more on families and communities.

Perhaps the greatest opportunity lies in learning from one another rather than assuming there is only one solution.

Maybe we are asking the wrong question

Perhaps the question is not:

Who will look after us?

Perhaps it is:

What kind of society do we want to become before we need looking after?

A society where older people remain visible.

Where experience is respected.

Where neighbours know one another.

Where technology supports humanity rather than replacing it.

Where ageing is seen not as a burden, but as another stage of life with meaning, purpose and value.

The Third Act

One day, every one of us will leave work for the final time.

None of us knows what the years beyond that moment will bring.

What we do know is this.

The world is changing.

People are living longer.

Communities are changing.

Technology is advancing.

The question of who will care for us is becoming more urgent with every passing year.

Perhaps the answer will never come from governments alone.

Or from technology alone.

Or even from families alone.

Perhaps the answer begins with recognising that every one of us has a part to play in building the kind of communities we hope will one day care for us in return.

Because the question isn’t simply:

Who will look after us?

It’s whether we are building a world where no one has to grow old feeling forgotten.

La jubilación no es igual en todas partes del mundo.

Sin embargo, la realidad suele ser mucho más compleja.

La jubilación puede traer libertad, pero también soledad.

Puede ofrecer tiempo, pero no siempre un propósito.

Y puede plantear una pregunta incómoda:

Por eso decidí comenzar esta nueva serie, The Third Act Around the World, comparando el Reino Unido y España.

Durante décadas, España ha representado para muchos británicos el sueño de la jubilación.

Sol, terrazas, un ritmo de vida más tranquilo, aire libre y una comunidad más visible.

Pero…

¿Es realmente mejor jubilarse en España?

¿O cada país afronta los mismos desafíos de una manera diferente?

La jubilación en el Reino Unido

En el Reino Unido, la jubilación suele empezar con preguntas muy prácticas.

¿Será suficiente la pensión?

¿Podré pagar las facturas?

¿Qué ocurrirá si necesito atención médica?

¿Estaré solo?

¿Seguiré sintiéndome útil?

El Reino Unido ofrece estabilidad.

Conoces el idioma.

Conoces las normas.

Sabes cómo funciona el sistema, incluso cuando no funciona perfectamente.

Eso aporta seguridad.

Pero también existe un riesgo.

La vida puede hacerse cada vez más pequeña.

El mismo supermercado.

La misma televisión.

El mismo paseo.

La misma casa silenciosa.

Para quienes viven solos, la jubilación puede convertirse en una sucesión de días iguales.

El atractivo de España

España ofrece algo que muchas veces resulta más difícil de encontrar en el Reino Unido: la vida al aire libre.

El clima cambia la forma en que vivimos.

Las personas pasean más.

Se reúnen en cafeterías.

Conversan en plazas y parques.

Las calles siguen llenas de vida incluso al final del día.

Eso importa.

Una persona que puede sentirse aislada durante un invierno británico quizá encuentre más oportunidades para relacionarse en una ciudad española.

Además, la vida familiar suele ser más visible.

Los abuelos forman parte del día a día.

Las personas mayores no desaparecen de la vida pública.

Eso no significa que España sea perfecta.

Mudarse a otro país durante la jubilación también implica desafíos importantes.

Aprender un idioma.

Comprender la burocracia.

Adaptarse a una cultura diferente.

Encontrar nuevas amistades.

El sol, por sí solo, no elimina la soledad.

Pero puede crear un entorno que facilite una vida social más activa.

La atención sanitaria

Para cualquier jubilado, la atención sanitaria es una de las mayores preocupaciones.

El Reino Unido cuenta con el NHS, un sistema muy valorado por su principio de ofrecer atención según la necesidad y no según la capacidad económica.

España también dispone de un excelente sistema sanitario público.

Muchos pensionistas británicos que residen legalmente en España pueden acceder a él mediante el formulario S1.

Pero jubilarse en otro país requiere planificación.

No basta con comprar una vivienda junto al mar.

Es necesario comprender la legislación, los derechos sanitarios y las obligaciones administrativas.

En ese aspecto, permanecer en tu país de origen ofrece una ventaja evidente: la familiaridad.

¿Es realmente más barata la vida?

España suele considerarse más económica que el Reino Unido.

En muchas regiones esto puede ser cierto.

La vivienda, la restauración o el transporte pueden resultar más asequibles.

Sin embargo, una vida más barata no garantiza una vida mejor.

Puedes ahorrar dinero y seguir sintiéndote solo.

Puedes vivir frente al mar y seguir sin tener un propósito.

La jubilación nunca es únicamente una cuestión económica.

También es una cuestión emocional, social y humana.

Quizá la diferencia sea la comunidad

La verdadera pregunta no es:

¿Dónde hace mejor tiempo?

La verdadera pregunta es:

¿Dónde resulta más fácil sentirse parte de una comunidad?

Aquí el Reino Unido podría reflexionar.

¿Hemos diseñado una jubilación demasiado aislada?

¿Hemos permitido que muchas personas mayores desaparezcan de la vida pública?

¿Consideramos la jubilación como el final de la contribución de una persona en lugar del comienzo de una nueva etapa?

España no tiene todas las respuestas.

Pero recuerda algo importante:

Las personas mayores siguen formando parte de la comunidad.

Siguen ocupando las plazas, los cafés y las calles.

Quizá ahí exista una lección.

El propósito después del trabajo

Tanto España como el Reino Unido comparten un mismo desafío.

Vivimos más años.

Trabajamos de otra manera.

Las familias son más pequeñas y viven más dispersas.

La tecnología está transformando el empleo.

Por eso la jubilación ya no puede significar simplemente dejar de trabajar.

Necesitamos construir un nuevo significado para esta etapa.

Puede ser la creatividad.

Puede ser el voluntariado.

Puede ser aprender nuevas tecnologías.

Puede ser transmitir conocimientos.

Puede ser comenzar una nueva aventura.

La pregunta no es únicamente dónde vivimos.

La pregunta es cómo queremos vivir.

Entonces...

¿Quién lo hace mejor?

Probablemente ninguno de los dos.

Y, al mismo tiempo, ambos.

El Reino Unido ofrece estabilidad, idioma y raíces.

España ofrece un estilo de vida más social, un clima diferente y una cultura más orientada a la convivencia.

Cada país tiene fortalezas.

Cada país tiene debilidades.

Lo importante no es únicamente el lugar donde nos jubilamos.

Lo importante es la vida que decidimos construir.

Lo que el Reino Unido podría aprender de España

Quizá el Reino Unido debería dar más importancia a los espacios públicos donde las personas mayores puedan reunirse de forma natural.

No como pacientes.

No como un problema.

Sino como ciudadanos.

Como vecinos.

Como personas con experiencia, conocimiento y mucho que aportar.

Lo que España nos recuerda

España nos recuerda que envejecer no significa desaparecer.

Que la conversación importa.

Que caminar importa.

Que la comunidad importa.

Que una vida más tranquila no es una vida menos valiosa.

A veces es simplemente una vida más humana.

From sunshine and family life to healthcare and community, what can Britain and Spain learn from each other about growing older?

Retirement does not look the same everywhere.

In Britain, retirement is often imagined as the reward at the end of a long working life. A pension. A bus pass. A few quiet years. Maybe some gardening, television, grandchildren, or a holiday if the money stretches far enough.

But for many people, the reality is more complicated.

Retirement can bring freedom, but it can also bring loneliness. It can bring time, but not always purpose. It can bring rest, but also the uncomfortable question:

What do I do with the rest of my life?

That is why I wanted to begin this new section, The Third Act Around the World, by looking at Britain and Spain.

Spain has long held a powerful place in the British retirement imagination. Sunshine, slower living, outdoor cafés, sea air, community, and the possibility of a different kind of life. For decades, many British retirees have looked at Spain not just as a holiday destination, but as an escape route.

But is retirement in Spain really better?

Or does every country simply have its own version of the same problem?

The British version of retirement

In Britain, retirement is often practical before it is emotional.

Can I afford the bills?

Will the pension be enough?

What happens if I need care?

How long will the NHS take?

Will I be lonely?

Will I still matter?

For many people, Britain offers familiarity and structure. You know the system. You know the language. You know how things work, even when they do not work particularly well.

There is comfort in that.

But there is also a danger.

British retirement can become very small if you are not careful. The same supermarket. The same chair. The same television. The same walk. The same silent house.

For people who live alone, retirement can become less about freedom and more about managing the empty spaces in the day.

The Spanish appeal

Spain offers something Britain often struggles to provide: outdoor life.

Climate changes behaviour. When the weather is warmer, people sit outside. They walk more. They meet in cafés. They linger in public spaces. Life spills out into the street.

That matters.

A person who might feel isolated in a British house in November may feel more connected in a Spanish town square in the evening.

Spain also has a stronger culture of visible social life. Families meet. Older people are seen in public spaces. The rhythm of the day feels less hidden behind closed doors.

That does not mean Spain is perfect, far from it.

Moving country later in life brings serious challenges: language, paperwork, residency rules, healthcare registration, cultural adjustment, and the risk of becoming trapped inside an expat bubble.

Sunshine does not automatically cure loneliness.

But it may change the conditions in which loneliness develops.

Healthcare: security matters

For retirees, healthcare is not a minor detail. It is central.

Britain has the NHS, and for all its problems, many older people still feel emotionally attached to the principle of healthcare based on need rather than wealth.

Spain also has a strong public healthcare system, and many UK pensioners who legally reside in Spain can access Spanish state healthcare through the S1 route.

But this is where dreams meet administration.

Retiring abroad is not simply a matter of buying a plane ticket and sitting in the sun. You need to understand the rules. You need documents. You need to register properly. You need to know what happens if your health changes.

This is where Britain has one advantage: familiarity.

When you are unwell, confused, frightened or older than you expected to become, familiarity has value.

Cost of living: cheaper is not the whole answer

Spain is often seen as cheaper than Britain, especially outside the major cities and tourist hotspots.

That may be true in many cases. Housing, coffee, eating out and local transport can feel more affordable depending on where you live.

But cheaper living is not the same as a better life.

A cheaper life without purpose is still a small life.

A cheaper life without friends is still lonely.

A cheaper life where you cannot speak the language can become isolating.

Money matters. Of course it does. But retirement is not only a financial calculation.

It is also a social, emotional and spiritual one.

Community may be the real difference

The biggest question is not:

Which country has better weather?

The real question is:

Which country makes it easier to stay connected?

This is where Britain needs to ask itself some uncomfortable questions.

Have we designed retirement around isolation?

Have we allowed older people to disappear into houses, flats and care systems?

Have we treated retirement as the end of usefulness rather than the beginning of a different kind of contribution?

Spain may not have all the answers, but its public life offers a useful challenge. Older people are more visible. Social life is more public. The street, the café and the square still matter.

Britain could learn from that.

Not by pretending Preston is Valencia.

Not by pretending a wet Tuesday in Lancashire can become a Mediterranean evening.

But by asking:

How do we bring people back into public life?

How do we make retirement less hidden?

How do we create places where older people can meet without needing a formal group, a medical referral or a crisis?

Purpose after work

This is where both Britain and Spain face the same deeper issue.

People are living longer.

Work is changing.

Families are smaller

, and more spread out.

Technology is replacing jobs.

Communities are weaker than they once were.

So retirement can no longer mean simply stopping.

The third act of life needs a new definition.

It might include creativity.

It might include mentoring.

It might include volunteering.

It might include learning new technology.

It might include caring for others.

It might include starting again.

The question is not simply where we retire.

The question is how we stay alive inside our own lives.

So which country gets it right?

Neither.

And both.

Britain offers familiarity, language, systems and roots.

Spain offers climate, outdoor life, public social spaces and a different rhythm.

But neither country can solve retirement for us unless we also ask what we want our later life to mean.

A person can be lonely in Britain.

A person can be lonely in Spain.

A person can find purpose in Preston.

A person can lose themselves on the Costa del Sol.

The country matters.

But the life we build matters more.

What Britain can learn from Spain

Britain could learn to take public social life more seriously.

We need more places where older people can simply exist around other people.

Not as patients.

Not as problems.

Not as service users.

As citizens.

As neighbours.

As people with stories, skills, humour, memory and value.

What Spain can remind us

Spain reminds us that ageing should not be hidden away.

Older people should be visible.

Conversation matters.

Walking matters.

Sunlight matters.

Community matters.

A slower life is not necessarily a lesser life.

Sometimes it is a more human one.

A small experiment

Every morning, millions of people wake to the sound of an alarm.

They rush to get dressed.

Rush through breakfast.

Rush through traffic.

Rush through meetings.

Rush home.

Rush through dinner.

Then collapse into bed, only to do it all again tomorrow.

We call it life.

But have you ever stopped and asked yourself one simple question?

What are we actually rushing towards?

For most of our lives, we’re told to keep moving.

Work harder.

Earn more.

Get promoted.

Buy a bigger house.

Upgrade the car.

Save for retirement.

Stay busy.

Keep going.

And somewhere along the way, being busy became a badge of honour.

If someone asks how we’re doing, the answer is almost automatic.

“Busy.”

As though exhaustion has become a measure of success.

The strange thing is that technology promised to give us back time.

Emails were supposed to replace letters.

Video calls were supposed to save travelling.

Artificial intelligence promises to automate repetitive work.

Smartphones promised to make life easier.

Yet somehow many of us feel busier than ever.

We’re connected to thousands of people online, yet loneliness is becoming more common.

We have access to almost all the world’s knowledge in our pockets, yet many of us struggle to concentrate for more than a few seconds.

We can communicate instantly across the globe, yet neighbours often don’t know each other’s names.

Somewhere, something changed.

Perhaps the biggest illusion is believing that life begins once we reach the next milestone.

I’ll be happy when I get the promotion.

I’ll relax when the mortgage is paid.

I’ll travel when I retire.

I’ll spend more time with family when work settles down.

But life has a habit of moving the goalposts.

There is always another deadline.

Another bill.

Another responsibility.

Another reason to postpone living.

Then one day, almost without warning, you realise something.

Time has been quietly moving on while you’ve been making plans.

Maybe the purpose of life was never to arrive as quickly as possible.

Maybe it was to notice the journey.

To enjoy conversations that don’t have an agenda.

To learn something simply because it fascinates you.

To create something with your own hands.

To walk without constantly checking your watch.

To call an old friend.

To watch a sunset without feeling guilty that you’re not being productive.

Perhaps success isn’t measured by how busy we become.

Perhaps it’s measured by how fully we experience the time we’ve been given.

As I’ve grown older, I’ve realised that the most valuable thing I own isn’t my possessions.

It isn’t my qualifications.

It isn’t even my career.

It’s my time.

Unlike money, none of us knows how much we have left.

That changes your perspective.

It makes you ask different questions.

Not “How can I earn more?”

But “How do I want to spend today?”

Not “What should people think of me?”

But “Am I living in a way that feels meaningful?”

Not “What’s next?”

But “What’s important?”

I don’t pretend to have all the answers.

I’m still asking these questions myself.

Perhaps that’s what this journey is really about.

Not racing to the finish line.

Not collecting more things.

Not trying to keep up with everyone else.

But choosing, whenever we can, to slow down just enough to appreciate the life that’s happening right now.

So I’ll leave you with the same question I asked at the beginning.

What are we actually rushing towards?

And if the answer isn’t the life you truly want...

Perhaps today is the perfect day to change direction.

Dear Thomas,

When people reach my age, they often begin talking about what they will leave behind.

Some speak about money.

Others speak about houses.

A few speak about family heirlooms.

I understand why.

It’s natural to want the people we love to be cared for after we’re gone.

One afternoon, while sorting through old boxes in the loft, I came across a small wooden chest.

Inside were things that would have meant very little to anyone else.

An old railway ticket.

A faded photograph.

A postcard from your grandmother.

A key that no longer fitted any lock.

The watch my father wore every day.

None of them were valuable.

At least, not in the usual sense.

Yet I found myself smiling as I held each one.

Every object carried a story.

Every story carried a memory.

Every memory carried a person.

It made me wonder.

When people say they are leaving an inheritance, what are they really passing on?

The following week I visited an elderly solicitor to update my will.

After we had finished the paperwork, he asked me an unexpected question.

“Is that everything?”

“I believe so.”

He smiled.

“I’ve been writing wills for nearly forty years.”

“I’ve learned something.”

“What is that?”

“The things people fight over after someone dies are rarely the things they remember most.”

He pointed towards a shelf behind his desk.

On it sat dozens of old boxes.

“Do you know what families treasure most when everything else has been sorted?”

I shook my head.

“Letters.”

“Diaries.”

“Recipes.”

“Photographs with stories written on the back.”

He paused.

“The voices of people they can no longer ask questions.”

Those words stayed with me.

Walking home, I realised why I had started writing these letters.

Not because I thought I had all the answers.

Not because I expected you to agree with everything I said.

But because one day there may be questions you wish you had asked me.

Questions neither of us can imagine today.

Perhaps these letters will answer one or two of them.

Perhaps they won’t.

Either way, they’ll remind you that I was here.

That I thought about you.

That I hoped the world would be kind to you.

And that, whenever it wasn’t, I hoped these words might offer a little comfort.

The older I become, the less interested I am in leaving possessions.

Possessions eventually belong to someone else.

Money is spent.

Buildings change hands.

Objects wear out.

But an idea...

A kindness...

A lesson...

A story...

Those things have a curious way of continuing long after we are gone.

As I placed the old wooden chest back into the loft, I realised something.

The greatest gift my parents left me was not something I inherited.

It was the example they set.

Their patience.

Their generosity.

Their quiet resilience.

I still carry those gifts every day.

In the years ahead, Thomas, people may remember what you achieved.

They may remember what you owned.

But the people who truly loved you will remember something else.

How you made them feel.

The time you gave them.

The kindness you showed.

The stories you shared.

Never underestimate the value of leaving people with good memories.

They are the only inheritance that grows more valuable with time.

Dear Thomas,

One of the happiest places I ever visited wasn’t famous.

It didn’t appear in travel guides.

No tourists queued to see it.

Most people simply drove past without giving it a second thought.

It was an ordinary community garden on the edge of the city.

Or so I believed.

When I walked through its gates, I noticed something unusual.

Every tree had a small plaque beside it.

Not with the name of the person who planted it.

But with the year it was expected to reach full maturity.

Many of the dates were decades into the future.

I smiled.

Most of the people planting these trees would never live to sit beneath their shade.

Curious, I asked one of the volunteers why.

She laughed.

“That’s exactly why we plant them.”

I must have looked puzzled.

She handed me a watering can.

“Come and help.”

For the next hour we planted young oak saplings along the edge of the garden.

They were barely taller than my knee.

Fragile.

Almost insignificant.

When we finished, I asked the question that had been on my mind all afternoon.

“Doesn’t it bother you that you’ll never see these become great trees?”

She looked across the garden.

“Not at all.”

“Why?”

“Because someone I never met planted the ones we’re enjoying today.”

I looked around.

Children were playing beneath enormous trees.

Families were eating lunch in their shade.

Birds nested high in branches planted generations earlier.

She continued.

“We’re not planting trees.”

“We’re planting gratitude.”

Her words stayed with me.

Later I noticed another plaque.

It simply read:

Someone you never knew wanted your future to be better.

I thought about that for a long time.

So much of what we enjoy comes from people we’ll never meet.

The roads we travel.

The libraries we borrow from.

The parks we walk through.

The discoveries of scientists.

The sacrifices of previous generations.

Most of life’s greatest gifts arrive from strangers separated from us by time.

Before leaving, I planted one final tree.

The volunteer asked if I wanted my name on the record.

I shook my head.

“No.”

She smiled.

“You’ve understood.”

As I walked home, I realised that perhaps the purpose of life isn’t simply to enjoy the garden.

Perhaps it is to leave it more beautiful than we found it.

In the years ahead, Thomas, you’ll have opportunities to build things that may outlast you.

Not all of them will be physical.

Some will be friendships.

Some will be kindness.

Some will be ideas.

Some will be encouragement offered at exactly the right moment.

Never underestimate the difference you can make in the life of someone you’ll never meet.

The future is built by people willing to plant trees whose shade belongs to someone else.

Retirement doesn’t come with instructions

When I retired in September 2024, I thought I knew what retirement would look like.

A little more rest.

A few holidays.

Longer mornings.

Less stress.

What I hadn’t realised was that work had quietly given me something I never noticed while I was doing it.

Structure.

Routine.

Purpose.

When that disappeared, I found myself asking questions I’d never had time to ask before.

What do I want my life to look like now?

That question turned out to be both uncomfortable and exciting.

Nobody can answer that question for you

Friends can encourage you.

Family can support you.

Books can inspire you.

Articles like this might make you stop and think.

But nobody can hand you a purpose.

At first, I found that thought unsettling.

Now I find it liberating.

Because it means your future isn’t decided by your age.

It isn’t decided by your pension.

It isn’t decided by what you used to do for a living.

It’s decided by the choices you make from today onwards.

I stopped waiting

I realised I could spend years wondering what to do next.

Or I could simply start.

So I did.

Five weeks ago I pressed the Publish button on The Third Act.

I had no audience.

No subscribers.

No guarantees that anyone would ever read a single word.

I simply had a belief that there must be other people asking the same questions I was.

What happens after retirement?

Can we still learn?

Can we still create?

Can we still matter?

Today, just five weeks later, thousands of people have read these articles.

I’m not sharing that because I think it’s extraordinary.

I’m sharing it because, five weeks ago, I nearly convinced myself not to begin.

If I’d waited until I felt ready, this community wouldn’t exist.

Sometimes the hardest step isn’t the second or the tenth.

It’s the first.

Reinvention doesn’t have to be dramatic

You don’t have to change the world.

You don’t have to start a business.

You don’t have to become famous.

Sometimes reinvention begins with something as simple as saying:

“I’ve always wanted to try that.”

Take the walk.

Buy the camera.

Learn the language.

Write the story.

Plant the garden.

Volunteer.

Join the choir.

Learn how to edit a video.

Paint your first picture.

Take the train somewhere you’ve never been.

Every small step says the same thing.

My story isn’t over.

This is why I started The Third Act

I didn’t create this publication because I have all the answers.

I created it because I’m still asking the questions.

This isn’t a place where I’ll tell you how to live your life.

It’s a place where we can share our journeys, encourage one another and prove that life after retirement can still be full of purpose, creativity and adventure.

Some of us are learning new skills.

Some are rediscovering old passions.

Some are simply trying to find the confidence to take that first step.

Every journey matters.

Because every journey reminds someone else that they’re not alone.

If I can begin again, so can you

I’m sixty-six.

I’m still learning.

I’m still making mistakes.

I’m still discovering what this next chapter looks like.

And that’s perfectly alright.

Maybe that’s the real lesson retirement has to teach us.

Not that life slows down.

But that we’re free to choose its direction.

You don’t need permission.

You don’t need to have everything worked out.

You don’t need to know exactly where the road leads.

You only need enough courage to take the next step.

It’s about discovering what else you’re capable of.

Here are seven practical steps that anyone can begin today.

1. Accept That the World Has Changed

This isn’t about giving up.

It’s about seeing reality clearly.

Many people spend years waiting for things to “go back to normal.”

History tells us they rarely do.

Every major technological shift has created winners and losers, but the people who adapted earliest were usually those who accepted change rather than resisted it.

The sooner you accept that the rules have changed, the sooner you can start writing your own.

2. Become a Student Again

School taught us that learning ends.

Life teaches us that it doesn’t.

You don’t need another expensive degree.

Start with one skill.

Learn how to edit video.

Understand artificial intelligence.

Take photographs.

Write.

Build a website.

Learn basic coding.

Master spreadsheets.

Study public speaking.

Choose something that genuinely interests you.

Spend just thirty minutes each day learning it.

Small steps become remarkable progress over time.

3. Stop Thinking About Jobs. Start Thinking About Skills

Jobs come and go.

Skills stay with you.

Instead of asking,

“What job should I do?”

Ask,

“What useful skills can I develop?”

Writing.

Communication.

Problem-solving.

Teaching.

Organisation.

Creativity.

Leadership.

These are skills that transfer across industries.

The more versatile your skills become, the more adaptable you become.

4. Work With Artificial Intelligence—Not Against It

Many people fear AI because they see it as competition.

I see it differently.

Artificial intelligence is becoming one of the most powerful tools ordinary people have ever had.

It can help you write.

Brainstorm ideas.

Learn faster.

Create presentations.

Design images.

Edit videos.

Translate languages.

Research topics.

The people who benefit most won’t necessarily be technology experts.

They’ll be people who learn how to combine their life experience with new technology.

Experience provides judgement.

AI provides speed.

Together, they’re a powerful combination.

5. Build Something That Belongs to You

For years, many of us built careers around someone else’s business.

Today, it’s easier than ever to create something of your own.

Start a blog.

Write on Substack.

Create videos.

Sell digital products.

Share your expertise.

Teach what you’ve learned.

You don’t need millions of followers.

You need consistency.

Creating something that’s yours builds confidence as well as opportunity.

6. Look After the Person Doing the Learning

Reinvention isn’t only intellectual.

It’s physical and emotional too.

Poor sleep makes learning harder.

Stress reduces creativity.

Isolation affects confidence.

Exercise improves thinking.

Walking stimulates ideas.

Conversations create opportunities.

Looking after your health isn’t separate from building your future.

It’s part of it.

The healthier you are, the easier it becomes to adapt.

7. Stay Curious

If I had to choose one quality that matters most in the years ahead, it wouldn’t be intelligence.

It would be curiosity.

Curious people ask questions.

They experiment.

They aren’t embarrassed to be beginners.

They understand they won’t know everything, and they’re comfortable with that.

Curiosity keeps you moving when certainty disappears.

It turns fear into exploration.

And it reminds you that every expert was once someone who knew absolutely nothing.

The Best Time to Start Is Now

Many people believe reinvention has an age limit.

I don’t.

I’ve met people who discovered painting in retirement.

Others started writing.

Some launched businesses in their sixties and seventies.

Others embraced technology they once believed was beyond them.

They weren’t chasing youth.

They were embracing possibility.

Perhaps that’s the real lesson.

Reinvention isn’t about becoming younger.

It’s about refusing to stop growing.

The world will continue to change.

Artificial intelligence will become more capable.

Careers will continue to evolve.

Some jobs will disappear.

Others haven’t even been invented yet.

We can’t control all of that.

What we can control is our willingness to learn.

Maybe the future doesn’t belong to the youngest.

Maybe it belongs to those who never lose their curiosity.

And perhaps the most important qualification any of us can earn is the one that isn’t printed on a certificate.

The willingness to begin again.

A simple challenge

Choose one new skill you’ve always wanted to learn.

Spend just 30 minutes on it today.

Not tomorrow.

Today.

Then do the same tomorrow.
